Buy the Chair First

Most rooms get furnished backwards. The sofa comes first because it's "practical," then the rug, then the coffee table, and by the time anything interesting arrives there's no room left for it — visually or literally.

Do it the other way. Find the one piece you actually love — the chair, the console, the lamp that made you stop scrolling — and buy that first. Let it set the temperature of the room. Everything after it becomes an easier decision, because now there's something to agree with or push against.

This is also the honest argument for spending real money on one piece instead of decent money on five. Five okay pieces average out to an okay room. One serious piece plus quiet supporting furniture reads as a point of view.

And a point of view is the only thing you can't order in a twelve-week lead time.
